Council OKs downtown S.J. parking plan

By the Mercury News

The San Jose City Council on Tuesday accepted a redevelopment agency
recommendation to build five parking garages downtown over the next
several years, adding more than 4,100 much-needed spaces.

The downtown parking management plan calls for garages north of the
Hotel De Anza, on the Greyhound bus terminal site, and under Parkside
Hall near the Tech Museum of Innovation. Other garages could be built
through partnerships with private developers who are considering
building retail projects near South Second and East Santa Clara
streets, and South Second and East San Carlos streets.

All five garages are expected to cost $145 million. The garages would
be financed through the sale of bonds and other sources, including an
increase in parking fees at city owned lots and garages, according to
the recommendation.

The council will decide at a later date how and when to implement the
recommendation.

A total of 27 sites were considered, including St. James Park and
Plaza de Cesar Chavez, locations that no longer are being considered.
